Med School Was Easy, Swimming is a Challenge: A Paradox? Not at All.

January 31, 2022 Valerie Hansbrough

Let's begin with the easy part, Med School. Growing up, I was shy, insecure. Books were/are a comfort to me. When something makes sense, it's satisfying. Medicine is an artful combination of science and humanity. Plus, it's problem-solving. Also, there is no focus on myself.

Costa Rica Waterfall Swim by Judy Narcissé

I am a swimmer.

Wow! I can’t believe I am saying this and I love it!

In 2012 I finally gave in to my good friend, Dr. Chalice Coleman’s invitation to come swimming with her and a new coach, Derrick Milligan. Chalice had started relearning how to swim and was very pleased with her progression.

I had tried for years to learn how to swim with no success. I could not stay on top of the water so I developed a fear of swimming.

Even though I agreed to meet Derrick Milligan I admit I was apprehensive, I’ve tried this many times before with terrible results. WHAT AM I DOING HERE!!!!  Well, the first time in the water with Derrick guiding us “newbies” in underwater breath control I began to feel more and more comfortable in the water. In 4 weeks I was swimming in Prone Balance the length of the pool.

Today I love the water. The feeling of freedom, being one with the water is such fun for me now.

I was in Costa Rica this past January and went on a tour of Water Falls. They were all so beautiful. Nature’s wet playgrounds.

At one of the highest peak falls I was the first to get into the water. It was so inviting..I walked in then streamlined out and caught the current that flows water down the mountain.

I have swum in oceans but never experienced caught in a current…I panicked, began to lose form and control then instinctively turned on my back, gained control, went into Right Hand Skate then Dolphin Kick for propulsion then FreeStyle form away from the current.

Everything I was taught to recover and survive kicked in. I thanked Derrick in my mind and out loud!

Using the techniques taught to recover with success gives me more confidence every time I use them.
